What a treat!VisionsTranquil and serene, another recent piece Visionsexpresses a pastoral landscape of gentle rolling hills andmeadows. Contemporary harmonies constantly shift as a mainmelodic theme is introduced and transformed again andagain. A secondary rhythmic theme also plays a centralrole.

This piece was specially written for oboist,Kristana Johnson and pianist, Susan Alexander. You canlisten to their marvelous performance in the MP3recording.Blessed'Blessed' is a piece for alto saxophone andpiano. The piece is an experiment-a blend of twodifferent styles, jazz and Jewish.

The purpose of thiscompetition is to encourage the composition of 'inventive, and playable' chamber music featuring the clarinet. ThePripet Marshes is a rhapsody for clarinet quintet(clarinet plus string quartet, or for clarinet plus stringorchestra).

It was inspired by the poem, The PripetMarshes by Irving Feldman. This haunting poemdescribes how the narrator might put himself in the shoesof an omnipotent power, and transplant his friends to aJewish village in the northwest Ukraine during World WarII. Each person is a unique character with a human charmand frailties. Then he would snatch the village back tosafety before the arrival of the Nazis.

While the musicdoes not try to mirror the story-this is not programmaticmusic-it does try to reflect the mood of the poem.Jewish-style melodies sweep through the piece with awhisper of Klezmer. On a Sunday Afternoon(6 MB)On a Sunday Afternoon is for clarinetquartet (Eb clarinet, two Bb clarinets, and bassclarinet). It is filledwith catchy rhythms, counterpoint, and pleasant melodies.Writing it was quite a challenge.

The reason is that itwas my first composition for multiple woodwinds. Beforethis, I usually started the composition process with aninteresting harmonic progression and a catchy rhythm, using a pad or multi-voice (piano, guitar) instrument andtaking off from there. In this piece, I could not use thisapproach at all, because each instrument can only play asingle note at a time.

I don't have a section of stringsplaying full-bodied chords, or a piano playing chords witha fun rhythm. As a result, the counterpoint aspect is muchstronger than usual.Quartet FusionQuartet Fusion is for trumpet, altotrombone, bass clarinet and bassoon. A scalawagis a mischief-maker. This piece mirrors the scheming andconniving that a scalawag uses to cause all sorts oftrouble.

But even trouble-makers need to take a rest oncein a while. During those brief moments, the world seems totake a deep sigh of relief.
